Join us to make Alfombra designs for our upcoming VFT to Antigua for Semana Santa. Alfombras are the beautiful street designs that are built throughout the procession paths during this massive celebration.
Materials :
Paper Option – Paper and colorful drawing tools (crayons, markers, or color pencils)
3D Option – Actual Alfombras are constructed with sawdust as a base layer. Then colored sawdust and natural materials such as flower pedals, pine needles, and even food items are used to layer designs on top of the base. You will need to find materials to mimic these.
Example 1) items from the kitchen like sugar, colored sugar, rice, pasta shells, etc.
Example 2) items from outside such as sand, pebbles, leaves, sticks, etc.
Whichever you choose, try to find different colors to make colorful designs on the top layer. Also, the top layer material needs to be able to stay on top. For example, you don’t want to pour sugar on top on pasta shells, but you can place pasta shells on top of a bed of sugar.
Something to build your Alfombra in. An empty pan, box, or box top (e.g., shoe box) will work great.
